Road Warriors Top Stingrays for First Home Win

Greenville, SC: The Road Warriors won their first home game of the season with a shootout victory over the South Carolina Stingrays by a 2-1 score.

The first period started off slow with the Road Warriors struggling to find an offensive groove. South Carolina challenged goaltender Jeff Malcolm throughout the period sending 12 shots his way. Stingray Chad Painchaud scored the first goal of the game on an unassisted goal seven minutes into the period.

In the second period, both teams had two power play opportunities, but goaltenders Malcolm and Jeff Jaikaitis denied any chances. Malcolm saved all 10 shots faced and the Road Warriors were unable to get any of the ten shots on goal behind Jaikaitis.

The Road Warriors entered the third period on a power-play that carried over from the second period. Forward Brandon Hynes scored off an assist from Lee Baldwin to even the game at one. The remainder of the period was a stalemate and the teams needed extra time to decide the victor.

Overtime was similar to the third period both teams had equal scoring chances. But goalies Malcolm and Jaikaitis prevented any goals and overtime ended with the teams still tied at 1-1.

The shootout started with Jordie Johnston scoring for the Road Warriors. Chad Painchaud shot first for South Carolina but was denied by Malcolm. Brandon Hynes shot second for Greenville and scored on Jeff Jaikaitis to put Greenville up 2-0 in the shootout. Those were the only two goals scored in the shootouts as Jordan Owens, Peter Boyd and Marc Hagel were all denied for South Carolina. Andrew Rowe and Marc-Olivier Vallerand were denied for the Road Warriors. The shootout concluded with a Warriors 2-1 victory in the game. Malcolm stopped 32 shots in route to his second victory of the season. Jakaitis made 30 saves in his second loss of the season.

The Warriors return to home ice on Friday against the Gladiators for a 7 p.m. faceoff. The Warriors Fun Pack is available for just $48! ABC Party Rentals Warriors Fan Fest takes place from 5-7 p.m. with food, beverage and live entertainment. In addition, former Road Warriors' captain T.J. Reynolds will be signing autographs from 5:30-6:30 p.m.! Any fan who donates five (5) children's books on Friday receives a buy one, get one free voucher for the December 13th Teddy Bear Toss game.

Get in the holiday spirit and join the Greenville Road Warriors for the 4th annual Teddy Bear Toss game on December 13th presented by WSSL. Bring a stuffed animal to the game to throw on the ice after the Road Warriors score their first goal. The Road Warriors are looking to beat last season's donation of over 2,000 stuffed animals and encourage fans of all ages to come out to the game for some great fun and to help a great cause! All stuffed animals collected will be donated to Toys For Tots. On Saturday, December 14, Road Warriors players, joined by members of the U.S. Marine Corps, will deliver the stuffed animals to Sitton Buick on Laurens Road where they will then be donated to children in need.
