Winning in the Division

The Wheeling Nailers and Reading Royals enter Wednesday night's contest, with both sides experiencing recent success against their Atlantic Division rivals. Despite going 0-3-0 against Reading this season, the Nailers have rattled off three straight division wins, as they swept the Elmira Jackals, 1-0, 5-1, and 5-4 last week, improving to 4-0-0 against Elmira and 4-3-0 against the division. The Royals and Jackals split their first two head-to-head meetings, but Reading won the most recent clash, to lead the way with a 5-1-0 mark against the division.

Another Former Jackal Doomed Elmira

One night after Chaz Johnson netted a hat trick in Elmira, the Nailers returned home to take on the Jackals, in a game that was knotted at four in the closing minutes. With 2:23 remaining in regulation, former Elmira defenseman Mike Ratchuk found a loose puck in the left circle, and clobbered a slap shot into the top of the goal, clinching a 5-4 victory for the Nailers, as well as a three-game sweep of the Jackals. The Royals enter Wednesday having won five of their last six games, after splitting a pair of road contests in Kalamazoo (2-1 loss) and Toledo (5-4 win).

Different Starters

The Nailers and Royals are separated by just one point in the standings, as first place in the Atlantic Division will be on the line on Wednesday night. While both teams own records over .500, their routes to victory have started in completely different ways. The Nailers have scored first in three of their first 12 games, going 3-0-0 when they do and 3-5-1 when they don't. On the flip side, the Royals have netted the first goal in ten of their first 11 games, posting a 7-3-0 mark when they do, and an 0-1-0 record when they don't.

First Calls to the AHL

Wednesday night's Wheeling lineup will have a different look to it from last Saturday's, as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Hamilton Bulldogs made their first set of recalls. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton called up forwards Denver Manderson and Cody Sylvester, as well as defenseman Dustin Stevenson, while goaltender Eric Hartzell was assigned to the AHL Penguins by the parent club Pittsburgh Penguins. The Bulldogs recalled forward Stephen MacAulay, who made his AHL debut on Tuesday night, scoring his first professional goal, while adding an assist, to earn first star honors in Hamilton's 5-1 victory over Texas. Hartzell, Manderson, Sylvester, and Stevenson could all make their AHL debuts as early as Wednesday, when Wilkes-Barre/Scranton visits Rochester.

Condon's Crease & Billy the Backup

With Eric Hartzell having departed for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Mike Condon is now the lone goaltender on the Nailers' roster with a contract from an affiliate, as the Montreal Canadiens' prospect will have sole control of the crease for the time being. Condon and Hartzell had previously alternated nine straight games while Hartzell was in town, leading the squad to a 5-3-1 record. Entering Wednesday, Condon is 4-3-0, with a 2.16 GAA, and a .932 Sv%. The emergency backup goaltender on Wednesday night will be Equipment Manager Billy Higgins, who is no stranger to strapping on the pads.
