Great Lakes Loons News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN - Blake Smith doubled in two runs on a seventh inning double breaking a 1-1 tie and leading the Loons to a 3-1 School Kids Day game over the South Bend Silver Hawks at Coveleski Stadium.
The Loons completed a three-game sweep of the Silver Hawks and are now 9-0 against South Bend this season and 15-4 on road.
South Bend catcher Tyson Van Winkle broke a scoreless tie in the fourth with an opposite field double to right field, scoring second baseman David Nick. It was the only run Brett Wallach surrendered in his five-inning start.
Silver Hawks starter Eric Smith threw six scoreless innings until his defense let him down in the seventh. After a leadoff single by J.T. Wise and a sacrifice bunt from Lenell McGee, third baseman Bobby Borchering misplayed a ground ball to put runners on at first and second. Rafael Ynoa stole second allowing South Bend to intentionally walk Christian Lara to load the bases.
Brian Ruggiano drove in the tying run with a sacrifice fly to right. He was followed by Blake Smith, whose two-bagger gave the Loons two more runs. All three Loons runs were unearned.
Andy Suiter (2-2) threw two scoreless relief innings for the win. Steve Smith did not allow a run in the eighth. Then in the bottom of the ninth, with runners at second and third and two outs, Luis Vasquez induced a fly ball to deep center by Borchering to end the game and secure his eighth save of the season.
The two teams combined for five errors in a game, perhaps due to the early morning wake up call for both teams.
The Loons (21-12) begin a seven-game homestand with the first game of a four-game series against the Dayton Dragons in the Loons first matchup of the season against the Cincinnati Reds' Midwest League affiliate. It's Team Photo Giveaway Night, presented by ESPN 100.9-FM and Bay City Western High School Spirit Night. Game time is 7:05pm. Right-handed pitcher Matt Magill (0-0, 2.25 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Loons against right-hander Josh Ravin (1-2, 2.43).
The Great Lakes Loons are a fourth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
