Chiefs Swept at Home by Clinton with 5-4 Loss

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs were swept at home for the first time all season on Wednesday night, losing to the Clinton LumberKings by the score of 5-4. The loss drops the Chiefs to 19-15 on the year, a game and a half behind Quad Cities for first place in the Midwest League's Western Division.

Clinton got on the board in the first inning for the third consecutive game off starter Nick Struck. James Jones walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Vince Catricala was hit by a pitch, and both runners moved up one base on a passed ball. Mario Martinez singled and drove in two runs to give Clinton a 2-0 lead.

The Chiefs answered in the second to tie the game. Justin Bour singled to lead off and scored on DJ Fitzgerald's first home run of the season to even the score 2-2.

The Chiefs scored again in the fourth to take their first lead of the series. Greg Rohan reached on a fielding error by Catricala at third and advanced to third on a Fitzgerald double.

Jonathon Mota walked to load the bases and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Richard Jones scored Rohan to give the Chiefs a 3-2 lead.

Clinton answered back in the fifth to regain the lead. Gabriel Noriega singled and advanced to second on a Nick Franklin base hit. Jones loaded the bases with his third single of the game and a wild pitch on strike three to Catricala allowed Noriega to score to tie the game. Dennis Raben drove in two more runs on a single to give the LumberKings a 5-3 lead.

The Chiefs mounted a comeback attempt in the ninth against reliever Brandon Josselyn but fell just short. With one out Fitzgerald singled and advanced to second on a Mota base hit. Jones singled to load the bases and a Jose Valdez groundout scored Fitzgerald to make it 5-4. Josselyn struck out pinch-hitter Matt Cerda to end the game.

Struck (2-4) pitched four and 2/3 innings and surrendered five runs, four earned, on six hits while walking one and striking out five. Steven Grife pitched 2 and 1/3 innings and did not allow a run on one hit and one walk while striking out two. Andres Quezada pitched two perfect innings and struck out three.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game -DJ Fitzgerald (DH)- Fitzgerald went three-for- three with two RBI and hit his first home run of the season.

Notes...The Chiefs were swept at home in a three game series for the first time since May 16- 18, 2007 vs. Beloit... The Chiefs have allowed a run in the first inning in five consecutive games, all losses...Wednesday was Fitzgerald's second three-hit game...Seven of the Chiefs' eight home runs this season have come against Clinton...The Chiefs lead in the fourth inning was their first lead in 53 innings, dating back to their 10-5 victory at Kane County on May 7...The Chiefs are 3- for-22 with the bases loaded this season...Of Martinez's 22 RBI this season, 13 have come against the Chiefs...Richard Jones has the longest active hitting streak for the Chiefs at eight...Quezada tied a season-high for strikeouts with three, he also struck out three at home vs. Kane County on April 20...The Chiefs open a four-game series at Burlington Thursday at 6:30...The Chiefs will pitch RH Trey McNutt (1-0, 2.67) against Burlington RH Bryan Paukovits (2- 1, 2.42)...The game can be heard starting with the pre-game show at 6:15 PM on 96.5 ESPN Radio and www.peoriachiefs.com.
