Peoria Rivermen News Release

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Rivermen completed the 2005 preseason on Friday night with a 6-3 victory over the Iowa Stars at Carver Arena. The win was Peoria's third in a row and secured an undefeated preseason record (3-0-0-1) for the Rivermen as the team prepares for its inaugural season in the American Hockey League (AHL).

The Iowa Stars opened the scoring in the game at the 6:41 mark of the first period, when defenseman Kenny Smith connected with a shot from the right point. The Rivermen, however, took over the period from there.

Peoria defenseman Trevor Byrne evened the score at 1-1 about eleven minutes into the frame. After taking a nice pass from Peter Sejna just inside the blueline, Byrne unleashed a slap shot that found its' way to the back of the net. Several players on both teams swatted at it, but Byrne received credit for the goal.

About four minutes later, winger Charles Linglet tallied a power-play goal for the Rivermen. Blueliner Mike Mottau started the scoring play from the left point with a pass straight down the left side of the ice to Mike Glumac. Immediately after receiving the puck, Glumac fed a nifty no-look pass across the goalmouth to Linglet, who simply tapped it in for a 2-1 Peoria lead.

The Rivermen ended up out-shooting the Stars during the initial frame by a count of 17 to 7.

Within the first five minutes of the second period, the two teams traded goals. Dave Bararuk scored first for Iowa, while Peter Sejna dented the twine for the Rivermen. Both goals came on the power play.

With the game standing at 3-2 in favor of the Rivermen, right wing Colin Hemingway extended the Peoria lead at 7:16 of the second. Konstantin Zakharov made the play, as he stick-handled down the right side and drew the attention of several Stars defenders. Once he reached the goal line, he threw the puck backward against the flow of the play to Hemingway, who roofed a shot into the upper right corner of the net over Iowa goalie Dan Ellis.

Peoria's celebration of the Hemingway tally was short-lived, however, for Stars defenseman Brian Fahey retaliated just 24 seconds later at 7:40.

The period ended with a score of Peoria 4 and Iowa 3, and shot totals stood at 16 for Iowa and 25 for Peoria.

The Rivermen finished off the victory with two goals in the third period. The first of those markers came at 17:15 from Peoria blueliner Aaron MacKenzie while the Rivermen were short-handed. Positioned along the right boards, winger Peter Sejna dished the puck to MacKenzie above the left hash marks. MacKenzie then skated in on Stars goalie Dan Ellis, deked him, waited for Ellis to go down, and put a wrister over him into the open net.

Rivermen winger D. J. King topped off the evening for Peoria with an empty-net goal from the center face-off dot with 16 seconds remaining in the third.

The Rivermen will next play for real, as the team opens the 2005-06 AHL regular season on Thursday, October 6, at Iowa.
