Peoria Rivermen News Release

The Houston Aeros tried a physical style against Peoria on Friday but failed to match the latter's scoring outburst in a 5-1 Rivermen victory at the Toyota Center to round out the season series.

A pair of Houston giveaways led to Peoria's two first period goals. The first was a pass directly from an Aeros defender to Yan Stastny just inside Peoria's line, and he sprang Trent Whitfield down the right side of the ice for a snap shot on the blocker side past Barry Brust to make it 1-0 at 7:04.

Next, a Brust puckhandling miscue was doubled by a defensive giveaway to Charles Linglet in the right wing corner. Linglet fed the point where Ryan Glenn and Derick Martin combined for a shot that was tipped by Ryan Reaves for his third goal of the year at 14:15 for a 2-0 edge after 20 minutes of play.

The Rivermen continued the assault in the second period, as Stastny recorded his 12th goal of the season with a tip-in of a Jim Jackson shot as he was cross-checked down to the ice at 6:56, redirecting the puck through the pads of Brust.

Next, Jean-Guy Trudel fed a beautiful cross-crease saucer pass to a streaking Ryan Glenn for a power play goal at 13:04 of the second period to make it 4-0 and end the night for Brust, who made 11 saves on 15 shots.

Marco Rosa would notch a power play goal on a deflection off a Rivermen defender at 16:09 to break Marek Schwarz's (17 saves) shutout bid, but on a subsequent Aeros power play Stastny struck again, converting the rebound of Chris Porter's wrist shot at 19:27, a shorthanded goal that made it 5-1 at the break.

The third period featured plenty of penalties, including an unofficial total of eight majors as things continued to ramp up on the physical side. The scoreboard remained the same, however, and the Rivermen closed out the win to move within two points of fourth place and three points of third place San Antonio, who they will play tomorrow night at 7 pm.
