Peoria Rivermen News Release
The Peoria Rivermen overcame a two-goal deficit in the third period on Monday, but fell to the Chicago Wolves in overtime, 4-3 at Carver Arena. Chicago's Jordan Schroeder notched the game winner with under a minute to go in the extra frame as Peoria fell to 14-15-2-1 on the season.
Chicago jumped out to an early lead less than four minutes into the opening frame with Bill Sweatt's seventh goal of the season. At the 3:46 mark, Schroeder fed the puck to Sweatt at the top of the crease who wristed a one-timer over the glove of Ben Bishop and into the back of the net.
Peoria responded quickly and evened the game at 1-1 courtesy of Phil McRae's snipe at 7:34. Along the right boards, Brett Sterling flipped the puck ahead to McRae who grabbed possession and wristed a shot from the right circle past Wolves' goaltender Eddie Lack. Sterling and Anthony Nigro were credited with the assists.
In the second period, the Wolves came out firing early and often and scored a pair goals to build up a 3-1 advantage. At 2:15, Steve Reinprecht caught Bishop off guard and netted his first of the season while on the power play. Reinprecht was camped out down low and backhanded a shot past Bishop as the Peoria goaltender slid across the crease.
Less than two minutes later, Mike Duco slapped a shot from the top of the left circle that was saved by Bishop. The rebound however bounced right to Stefan Schneider at the top of the crease and Schneider knocked it home at the 3:46 mark.
The Rivermen began to creep back into the game midway through the third period as Derek Nesbitt notched his 11th of the year. At 9:46, Nesbitt set up and sent a slap shot from between the circles into the back of the net.
Less than two minutes later, Tyler Shattock drew the game back even with his fourth goal of the year. At the 11:39 mark, Brett Sonne sent the puck ahead to Shattock who wristed a shot off of the crossbar and into the net.
Both teams took a 3-3 tie into overtime, but Schroeder ended the contest with less than a minute to go in the extra frame. From the right boards, Sweatt made a powerful move to the net and Bishop made the initial stop, but the rebound once again popped to the top of the crease. Schroeder knocked it home to give Chicago the win at the 4:13 mark.
For the first time this season, Peoria did not have an opportunity on the power play while its penalty kill went 2-for-3. Bishop stopped 24 of the 28 shots he faced.
The Rivermen return to the ice Friday for a 6 p.m. CST start at Grand Rapids. The game can be heard in Peoria on CD Country 107.9 FM or by visiting www.rivermen.net.
