Mississippi RiverKings News Release
(Southaven, MS) --- The Mississippi RiverKings finished the 2008-09 regular season on a positive note, scoring five unanswered goals in a 5-1 victory over the Tulsa Oilers on Saturday night, March 21st at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven.
With the victory, the RiverKings finished the regular season with a 44-17-3 record, a CHL Northeast Division championship, and will move into the playoffs next week against the Oklahoma City Blazers, who took the number three seed in the Northern Conference playoff ladder, after a 5-2 win against Wichita Saturday evening.
Tulsa got on the scoreboard first, when Kai Magnussen scored his tenth goal of the season, popping in a loose puck in front of RiverKings goaltender Tyler Sims at 18:41 for a 1-0 first intermission lead.
Mississippi recovered in the second period, thanks to a power play goal from Stephen Margeson, his 12th goal of the year, at the 9:31 mark, with Matt Summers and Martin Gascon getting assists on the goal.
The RiverKings took the lead later in the period thanks to Dallas Costanzo, who poked a loose puck into the net past Tulsa goaltender Davis Parley. Costanzo scored his eighth goal of the year, assisted by Adam Smyth and Dallas Steward at 12:30, as Mississippi led 2-1 after two periods of play. Costanzo's goal would turn out to be the eventual game-winning goal for the RiverKings.
In the third period, the RiverKings salted the game away with goals from Steward, Garrett Larson and Summers for the final result.
The RiverKings took a season-high 59 shots on goal in the victory, including 25 in the second period of play. Tulsa was credited with 22 shots on goal, including three in the second period.
Tyler Sims earned the win in the crease for the RiverKings with a 21-save effort, while Davis Parley was tagged with the loss after stopping 55-of-59 shots on goal.
Mississippi's first two games of the CHL post-season playoffs against Oklahoma City will be at the DeSoto Civic Center on Wednesday, March 25th and 26th at 7:05 PM, both nights. For playoff ticket information, call the RiverKings front office at 662-342-1755 today!
