Controversial End To Scorpions Loss
March 21, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
New Mexico Scorpions News Release
[RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-Arizona hung on for a 2-1 victory amid controversy in the game's final stages. The loss ended the Scorpions playoff chances for the season.
The Sundogs went ahead as Joel Irving scored and unassisted goal 7:28 into the final period. With just over two minutes showing on the clock, the Scorpions were given a power play.
Not once but twice, the Scorps appeared to have tied the game with a goal. Both times referee Mark Lemelin waived off the tally. The first time the referee lost sight of the puck and the second time he ruled the net to have been dislodged.
Arizona got the lone goal in the first period following a face-off win. Dwayne Hay flipped a bouncing puck into the net for his sixth tally of the season at the 13:47 mark.
On the power play Craig Macdonald shot the puck towards the net with Joel Gistedt making the save. The goalie thought he had the puck covered with his glove but it trickled through his legs and Seth Leonard was there to punch the puck into the net, tying the game.
The regular season closes tomorrow night as New Mexico will again host Arizona. The puck drops at 7:15 p.m. All fans entering the Santa Ana Star Center will receive a gift pack courtesy of Santa Ana Star Casino.
Following Saturday's game, stick around for the annual awards ceremony and trophy presentation. The organization will hand out the Most Valuable Player, Best Defenseman, Rookie of the Year and Jeff File Unsung Hero Awards on the ice.
After the on-ice presentation, join the players for the final post-game party at Turtle Mountain Brewing Company. TMBC is celebrating its 10th anniversary this coming weekend and the Scorpions are excited to be a part of the festivities.
The Scorpions are selling their season worn jerseys. The black and white game jerseys are being sold for $400 per jersey. This is the only way to get your hands on an authentic, game worn jersey from your favorite Scorpions player. All jerseys will be autographed after the season. Show your Scorps pride by donning the jersey worn by your hockey team.
