Mississippi RiverKings News Release
Six different players scored for the Mississippi RiverKings who beat the Corpus Christi Rayz 6-2 on Friday Night to clinch a playoff spot in the Northern Conference playoffs. The regulation loss was just the third in the last nine games for Corpus Christi who fell to 22-33-8 on the year. Corpus Christi will end their 2007-2008 season on Saturday Night in Mississippi in their second straight game with the RiverKings. Darrell Stoddard converted a rebound chance from the right edge of the crease at 2:58 to give Mississippi a 1-0 lead. The Kings made it 2-0 at 8:48 when Ryan Held beat Brad Smith on a breakaway. The Kings outshot the Rayz 11-4 in the opening period and took their two-goal lead into the second period.
The teams traded a pair of goals in the second period. Nick Lindberg got the Rayz on the board at 3:49, converting a two-on-none rush on Sebastien Centomo. The Kings pulled back ahead by two when Louis Dumont's shot from the slot found a hole through the left arm and body of Smith and trickled in at 7:31 to make the score 3-1. The Rayz again cut the lead in half when Jay Latulippe finished an odd man rush by slamming home a rink-wide pass from the left post at 12:25. But the RiverKings answered a second time to make the score 4-2. Aaron Davis scored on a rebound during a Mississippi power play at 14:09 to cap the second period scoring. The Kings outshot the Rayz 17-7 in the frame.
The Kings added two more goals in the third to complete their playoff berth. Chad Wollard scored his tem-leading 36th goal of the year at 3:38 and Rick Kozak ended the scoring with a goal at 7:47
The Rayz were outshot by the Kings 36-22. Corpus Christi went 0 for 2 on the power play and Mississippi went 1 for 2. Smith took the loss for the Rayz, in his Corpus Christi debut and fell to 0-1, making 30 saves on 36 shots. Centomo made 20 saves on 22 shots, earning the win and upping his season record to 18-9-3.
