John DeCaro Named CHL's Most Outstanding Goaltender
March 21, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
The Central Hockey League (CHL) announced today that John DeCaro of the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs has been named the recipient of the 2007-08 Central Hockey League's Most Outstanding Goaltender award (Scott Brower Award). For the second consecutive season DeCaro wins the award âpresented annually to the Central Hockey League's most outstanding goaltender, in memory of Scott Brower, former Memphis goaltender and Corpus Christi employee.' Voting was done by CHL head coaches, communications departments and selected media members in each market. DeCaro received first place votes on 44 of the 48 ballots returned.
The Marysville, Washington native has re-written the CHL record book this season with his 11 shutouts (previous record was eight set by several netminders) along with his current 1.67 goals against average and .940 save percentage, both on pace to set single season records. The 6-3, 217-pound goaltender is 25-6-3 this season and earlier this week was named to the All-CHL team for the second straight year.
The two-time CHL All-Star's efforts have been recognized throughout the season twice being named the Sher-Wood CHL Goaltender of the Month (November & February) and twice being named the Oakley CHL Goaltender of the Week (November 26th & January 28th).
DeCaro earning the Most Outstanding Goaltender award marks the fifth time in the history of the Mudbugs organization that they have won the award; Ken Carroll (2005-2006 CHL & 2000-2001 WPHL), Kevin St. Pierre (1997-1998 WPHL) and DeCaro last season.
The recipient of the CHL's Most Valuable Player award will be announced on Monday, March 24th, in conjunction with the winner of the Joe Burton Scoring Champion award. Awards already announced were the recipients of the CHL Most Outstanding Defenseman (New Mexico's Vladimir Hartinger), CHL Athletic Trainer of the Year (Oklahoma City's Wade Sundbye), CHL Gunner Garrett Equipment Manager of the Year (Rocky Mountain's Patrick Stevens), CHL Coach of the Year (Bossier-Shreveport's Scott Muscutt), Rick Kozuback Award (Colorado's Chris Stewart) and CHL Man of the Year (Oklahoma City's Stacey Bauman) honors, along with both the 2007-2008 All-CHL and All-Rookie teams.
