DeCaro Again Named Most Outstanding Goaltender
March 21, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - The Central Hockey League today announced that Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs goaltender John DeCaro has been named 2007-2008 CHL Most Outstanding Goaltender. DeCaro wins the award for the second consecutive year after also being honored as the league's top goalie during his rookie season. He is also a finalist for the league's Most Valuable Player award, which will be unveiled on Monday, and was named to his second straight All-CHL team earlier this week.
The 6'3", 208 lb. native of Marysville, Washington is currently in the midst of one of the best seasons ever recorded by a CHL goaltender. DeCaro leads all goaltenders in goals-against average, saves percentage, shutouts and is tied for the league lead in wins. The second-year University of Alaska-Anchorage product has set or helped set new league records this season for: most shutouts in a season by a goaltender (11), most shutouts in a season by a team (17-with Ken Carroll), individual goaltender shutout streak (265:52), team shutout streak (218:57-with Ken Carroll), and consecutive team shutouts (3-with Ken Carroll).
Both his 1.67 goals-against average and .940 saves percentage this season are on pace to shatter the current league marks. Colorado 's Tyler Weiman set the current league bests with a season goals-against average of 1.80 and saves percentage of .938 during the 2004-05 season. The Mudbugs are also on pace to break the All-time CHL record for single season goals-against average by a team, thanks to DeCaro and Ken Carroll forming perhaps the best goaltending tandem in league history. With a 1.94 team goals-against average, the Bugs could break the current league mark of 2.05 by the 2003-04 Laredo Bucks.
The accolades have continued to pile up for DeCaro, who has now won two Goaltender of the Year awards, been named to two straight All-CHL teams and back-to-back CHL All-Star games. Number one was also named Sher-Wood CHL Goaltender of the Month for November and February and has twice been selected as the Oakley CHL Goaltender of the Week this year. He was also included on the 2006-07 CHL All-Rookie team.
DeCaro and the Mudbugs are in action this weekend at CenturyTel Center in their final two games of the regular season before starting their 2008 CHL playoff run next week. The Bugs host the Texas Brahmas Friday at 7:05 pm and the Rocky Mountain Rage Saturday at 7:05 to close out the regular season.
