November 9, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN --- The Memphis RiverKings scored four power play goals en route to winning their fourth in a row 5-2 over the Wichita Thunder Thursday night at the DeSoto Civic Center. The RiverKings improved to 6-1-2 on the season and will next play Saturday night at Corpus Christi at 8:05.
The RiverKings started early as Travis Banga snaked one around Thunder goalie Dan Giffin after an offensive zone face off 2:03 into the game. It was Banga's fifth and it gave the RiverKings a 1-0 lead. The squad would then convert on their next three power play chances in the first period. Ryan Campbell scored his team high 6th goal off a Darrell Stoddard rebound at 8:25. That was followed by Louis Dumont taking a feed from Jason Sessa at 11:09 for his third of the season.
After a Wichita goal made it 4-2, Derek Landmessser connected on his second of the season at 15:57 of the first to complete a four goal first period that saw the RiverKings go three for three on the power play. They finished the game four for eight with the man advantage while holding Wichita to one for nine.
The two teams exchanged goals in the second. The Thunder's Ryan McLean made it 4-2 at 9:53, but Jason Sessa put the RiverKings lead back at three with another power play one timer from the left wing at 15:39.
The RiverKing defense limited Wichita to 20 shots on goal while putting 32 on the Wichita net. Larry Sterling stopped 18 shots and improved to 5-0-2. Dan Giffin started the game in net for Wichita, but was pulled after Landmesser's goal in the first. Sebastien Laplante played the final 44 minutes and made 14 saves on 15 shots.
Prior to the game, the RiverKings announced that they had placed forward Sheldon Wenzel on the 45 Day IR and had signed forward Ryan Olynyk. Olynyk, a former Wichita Thunder winger, made his RiverKings debut Thursday night.
The RiverKings are off Friday before facing the Corpus Christi Rayz Saturday night at 8:05 at the American Bank Center in Corpus.
