Scorpions net another comeback victory
November 9, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
New Mexico Scorpions News Release
[RIO RANCHO, N.M.]- The New Mexico Scorpions, proud member of the Central Hockey League (CHL), are making a habit of giving their fans their money's worth on home ice with a 4-2 victory. Thursday night the Scorpions staged their third straight come-from-behind victory.
After 20 minutes of play, A Scorpions win looked like a long shot. Kyle Nosan scored two opening period goals giving Lubbock the lead and chasing Scorpions' starting goalie Walter Bartholomaeus to the bench.
A different Scorpions team came out in the second period, including goalie Brad Smith. Smith started the period with two solid saves on his way to a 19 save performance for the win.
Bob Kukulka put New Mexico on the board 7:46 into the period. Four minutes later the Scorpions would be shorthanded, which in the past has spelled trouble.
This time the tide turned and Ryan McLeod used his speed and made a spectacular backhanded shot to tie the game. It was McLeod's sixth goal of the season and the Scorpions first shorthanded goal this year.
As the script called for, the Scorpions again gave the fans a third period win. Aaron MacInnis, who scored his first goal a week ago in overtime against Youngstown, picked a perfect time to light the lamp for the second time.
MacInnis tailed Lance Herauf and McLeod on the play as the young forwards worked the puck deep into the Cotton Kings zone. McLeod's shot was saved by Lubbock goalie J.F. Perras, but MacInnis was there to put the rebound goal home, giving the Scorps' the first lead of the game.
When times are good, things tend to go your way. The Scorpions found that out when Victor Uchevatov dumped the puck into the Lubbock zone late in the third period. Instead of the puck cleanly working around the glass, it hit a partition and came right to Chris Robertson who was able to give the Scorpions a much needed insurance goal. It gave the Scorpions their first two goal lead and victory this season.
The Scorpions will not be able to enjoy the victory very long. The team heads overnight to Colorado for a date with the Eagles at 7:05 on Friday.
