Mississippi RiverKings News Release
Southaven -- The DeSoto Civic Center will feature pink ice on Friday, January 15 as the Mississippi RiverKings host Pink At The Rink to benefit the Susan G Komen Foundation. The RiverKings face off against the Tulsa Oilers at 7:05pm, and skating to the pink ice in, but of course, pink jerseys to promote breast cancer awareness.
"We are very excited to make this one of our most unique events," Dave Mattice, Director of Business Operations for the RiverKings said, "and a significant fundraiser for a great cause."
The RiverKings Pink At The Rink will benefit the Memphis-MidSouth Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a worldwide organization whose mission is to eliminate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment. Susan G. Komen for the Cure has led the nation's charge in the fight against breast cancer for more than 20 years.
Founded in 1982 to honor a promise made to Susan Goodman Komen, Nancy Goodman's older sister, who passed on at 36 years old of breast cancer. Today Nancy is joined by scores of women and men, families, researchers, corporate and community partners, volunteers and donors, who share her vow to do everything they can to fund a cure for cancer.
"The team's pink game worn jerseys, sponsored by First Tennessee, will be auctioned off following the game with proceeds benefitting the MidSouth Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure," Mattice explained. "Also, the first 1,000 fans through the doors of the DeSoto Civic Center that evening will receive a commemorative Pink At The Rink t-shirt courtesy of DeSoto Athletic Club."
The MidSouth Affiliate raises funds to provide breast cancer screening, treatment, education and support in DeSoto, Fayette, Tipton, Shelby and Tunica counties.
"We are also excited that $2 from each group and walk up ticket purchased will go to Komen for the Cure," Michael Rice, RiverKings Community Development representative said. "We have had a partnership with the MidSouth Affiliate for several years now, and this event will assist their organization to provide valuable services throughout our local communities."
Volunteers from the Memphis-MidSouth Affiliate will be present at the RiverKings game being featured on the concourse, as well as with a ceremonial puck drop.
"We are so fortunate to have this incredible fundraising opportunity with the RiverKings," Peg Ross, Administrative Director of the local affiliate said. "The RiverKings have been outstanding partners in our fight to eradicate breast cancer as a life threatening disease."
More than two million breast cancer survivors alive in the United States today can attribute their good fortune to early detection. Increased awareness, greater use of screening tests as well as better treatment options, means a better chance of surviving and a better quality of life than ever before.
"Their support in these special promotions will help us in our quest to find a cure for breast cancers and support our neighbors fighting the disease," Ross continued. "Pink at the Rink is going to be great fun and is yet another great example of the RiverKings commitment to our community. We value our relationship with the RiverKings, their staff, management and players and each and every one of their fans. Think Pink and Support the RiverKings Pink at the Rink!"
