RiverKings fan enjoys opportunity to help out on broadcast

Mississippi RiverKings News Release

SOUTHAVEN---When RiverKings fan and season ticket holder Jim Jones heard that "Kings With A Cause" was auctioning off the chance to spend a game in the RiverKings' radio broadcast booth, he literally ran to the table to place his first bid. The auction took place during the RiverKings' game on February 26 and when the bidding was closed, Jones' $125 bid was the winner.

"We thought it would be a fun way to raise some money for K.W.A.C.," RiverKings Broadcaster Jim Erickson said. "We made it so the person with the winning bid could do whatever they wanted. That could mean just sitting up there and watching how the broadcast is done, helping with stats, reading some commercial copy or even providing in-game color commentary , which is what Jim chose. He did a very professional job and displayed his hockey knowledge. I know he had fun and it was fun for me as well."

The chosen game for Jones' RiverKings broadcast debut was the March 5 game with Rio Grande Valley. Jones has some broadcasting experience, but admitted to having pre-game jitters.

"I was very nervous at first," Jones said. "But as the game got going, so did my competitive juices. I forgot I was on the radio. It was just like I was talking to a buddy of mine while we watched the game."

Watching the game from the broadcast booth was quite a change from the front row seats on the glass he and his family have in section 119.

"On the glass, you follow the puck and the action, so you miss a lot of the mind games and chess type maneuvers that take place away from the action. You can also see the players recognize plays and try to play the puck to the open spots. It also gives you a better appreciation for the speed of the game and the little things that happen away from the play."

The RiverKings plan on doing an auction like this as many as four times next season and Jones said he would do it again in a heartbeat.

"When it comes up at an auction again, people are going to have to really save up their pennies, because I want to sit up there again."

A RiverKings game can be even more fun when you take it in with your group or organization. Get your group together and have a great time at the DeSoto Civic Center. For more information or to purchase season tickets, group tickets, mini-plans, or 9 game vouchers call the RiverKings at 662-342-1755 and ask for the sales department or stop by the DCC during business hours.
