CHARLESTON, SC -- Designated hitter Cody Ehlers pounded three hits and drove home a run as the Charleston RiverDogs won their first game as a New York Yankees affiliate, beating the Augusta Greenjackets, 5-2, Thursday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The RiverDogs (1-0) were sparked by four pitchers who combined to allow the Greenjackets (0-1) to just six hits, and were led by Randy Vanderplow, who earned his first victory of the early season. Vanderplow pitched a perfect seventh inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced.

Charleston erupted for three runs in the third inning when Tim Battle singled off the leg of Augusta starter Mike Musgrave, who was forced to leave the game. Reliever Caleb Salankey entered the contest, and Battle promptly stole second base, and moved to third on a perfectly executed bunt by Justin Christian. Ben Jones singled up the middle, scoring Battle and Christian moved to third. Ehlers then drew a walk, and Estee Harris reached first on a fielding error by Carlos Sosa, his first of two miscues, scoring Christian and Jones.

The RiverDogs added a pair of runs in the fifth on Ehlers' single to left that scored Christian, who led off the frame with a single through the right side and moved to second when Marcos Vechionacci walked. Vechionacci scored on Sosa's second error, coming off the bat of Harris.

Augusta scored a single run in the third when Brian Horwitz singled home Marcus Sanders, who tripled with two outs. The Greenjackets added another tally in the top of the 6th on Simon Klink's two-out home run.

The two teams face each other Friday night at 7:05 p.m.
