Lake County Captains News Release

(Lakewood, NJ)--Righthander Chris Niesel appeared in mid-season form Sunday, working six shutout innings in a 5-0 win over the Lakewood BlueClaws at FirstEnergy Park.

Niesel, a ninth-round pick by the Tribe last summer, scattered three hits over six innings. He did not walk a hitter and struck out a team-high eight batters. He retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced, and finished his outing by retiring eight in a row. Niesel (1-0) allowed only two balls to be hit out of the infield.

The Captains (3-1) took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning against Lakewood starter Kyle Kendrick (0-1). Mike Butia led off with a single and moved to third on Wyatt Toregas' double to left. Second baseman Marshall Szabo then stroked a single to left to score Butia for a 1-0 lead. After a walk to Fernando Pacheco, Anthony Lunetta lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score Toregas and give the Captains a 2-0 lead.

Lake County extended the lead to 4-0 in the sixth against relief pitcher Chris Honsa. The first four Captains hitters had hits in the inning, including an RBI single by Lunetta, who finished with two hits and two RBI on the day. Argenis Reyes added a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.

Reyes added another sacrifice fly in the eighth to make it 5-0.

lefty Michael Hernandez followed Niesel to the mound and tossed two scoreless innings, striking out four. Righthander Matt Knox, a former Captains all-star first baseman-turned-relief pitcher, chipped in a scoreless ninth to complete the whitewash.

The three Captains pitchers combined to fan 13 BlueClaws hitters.

The Captains now return home for a seven-game homestand, beginning with the Heinen's Home Opener against Delmarva at 7:05 p.m. Monday evening. Tickets are available for the entire first homestand by calling (440) 954-WINS.
