Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, Ga. â A two-run blast by Savannah rightfielder Edgardo Baez highlighted a three-run fifth inning in Savannah's 4-1 win over Columbus. With the victory the Gnats clinched their first series win of the season and moved into a tie for first place in the South Atlantic League Southern Division.
The Gnats found themselves down 1-0 before getting their first cuts at Columbus starter Javy Guerra. In the top of the first, Fish centerfielder Jamie Hoffmann walked, stole second and scored on third baseman Blake DeWitt's single.
Savannah evened the score at one in the home half of the first when shortstop phenom Ian Desmond smacked a leadoff homer into the left field bleachers. The score remained knotted at one until the bottom of the fifth.
With one out in the home half of the inning, Savannah CF Rogearvin Bernadina singled to center and was chased home on Baez' round tripper. First baseman Brad Ditter doubled to right and came home on LF Reggie Fitzpatrick's double to left making the score 4-1.
Not to overlooked was the solid pitching of righty Collin Balester in his Savannah debut. The 18-year old starter surrendered only one run on three hits and a walk over six innings of work.
