Charleston RiverDogs News Release
Columbia, SC - Runs came at a premium on Thursday night at Segra Park. The Charleston RiverDogs and Columbia Fireflies combined to score just seven runs over 14 innings of baseball, splitting a doubleheader. Columbia held on for a 2-1 victory in the first game, while the RiverDogs led from start to finish for a 3-1 win in the nightcap.
Game one began with the RiverDogs going down in order in the top of the first and Columbia (18-16) striking quickly. Blake Mitchell lined a base hit to center field to open the home half of the frame. The next batter, Derlin Figueroa, hammered an RBI double to left center that short-hopped the wall as Mitchell scampered home.
The lead doubled with two outs in the fourth inning. Erick Pena hooked a double to the wall in the right field corner to extend the inning against RiverDogs starter T.J. Nichols. Jhonny Perdomo followed with a soft line drive to left field to push the margin to 2-0.
The RiverDogs (15-20) got one back in the top of the fifth. With one out, Odalys Peguero and Carlos Colmenarez lined back-to-back singles to put men on the corners. After a flare to second from Ricardo Gonzalez, Cristopher Barete punched an RBI single to center field to make it 2-1. However, Narciso Polanco struck out looking with two in scoring position to end the rally.
Charleston put two on base with no outs in the top of the seventh and final frame. Colmenarez attempted to put a bunt down, but failed, instead lining back to the pitcher to begin a double play. Gonzalez struck out looking to end the game.
Nichols took a tough loss after working 5.1 strong innings with two runs allowed on five hits. He struck out four and did not walk a batter for the first time this season.
Peguero was the lone player to register more than one hit in the game. The RiverDogs outhit Columbia 6-5.
The second contest started on a much better note for the RiverDogs, who served as the home team on the scoreboard. Noah Myers slapped a single through the left side and quickly stole second base with one out. Woo Shin followed with a well-placed groundball that turned into an infield single. In the next at-bat, Nicholas Regalado spiked a breaking ball that bounced past catcher Gabriel Silva, allowing the RiverDogs to put the first run on the board.
Blake Robertson opened the fourth inning with a double down the right field line and matriculated around the bases on a pair of groundouts, racing home on a Colmenarez chopper to third. That run made it 2-0 heading to the late innings.
Columbia reached the scoreboard and trimmed the deficit to one run in the top of the sixth. Seth Chavez retired the first two hitters of the frame but allowed a two-out single to Gabriel Silva. Lizandro Rodriguez followed with a double to the wall in right center that dropped just out of the reach of Myers. Silva rounded third in an attempt to score and the RiverDogs relay throw from Peguero at second base would have been in plenty of time to get him at the plate, but it bounced away for an error. With the tying run at third, Chavez caught a pop up by Milo Rushford to end the inning.
The RiverDogs added a big insurance in the bottom of the sixth in familiar fashion. Robertson opened the inning with a base hit and stole second. He moved to third on a groundball and again raced home on a bouncer by Colmenarez, avoiding the tag attempt of Silva at the plate. Chavez worked a scoreless seventh inning to end the game.
Owen Stevenson picked up his first win of the season by tossing 2.1 scoreless innings as the first arm out of the bullpen. Hayden Snelsire, the spot starter, did not surrender a run in 2.2 innings. Chavez allowed only an unearned run in 2.0 innings to notch his first save.
Both teams closed the game with six hits. Robertson was 2-2 with a pair of runs scored for the RiverDogs. Columbia received a pair of knocks from Silva.
The series is even at two wins apiece through the first four games. The fifth installment is set for Friday night at 7:05 p.m. when RHP Owen Wild (1-0, 3.26) takes the hill. Columbia will counter with RHP Emmanuel Reyes (1-1, 5.83).
