Mudcats Split Doubleheader with Down East

KINSTON, N.C. - The Carolina Mudcats split a doubleheader with the Down East Wood on Thursday at Grainger Stadium, winning the first game 3-1 and dropping the finale 5-0.

In the opening game, Carolina (23-10) broke a one all tie in the fifth inning as Reece Walling hit his first home run as a Mudcat, a two-run shot, to vault Carolina ahead, a lead they would not relinquish.

Down East (16-18) threatened in the bottom of the seventh putting a pair of men on base but Echedry Vargas grounded out to conclude the game and give Brayden Root his fourth save of the season.

In the night cap, Down East (17-18) jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they cruised to a 5-0 victory.

The Wood Ducks struck for a pair of runs in the opening frame as Arturo Disla homered for 2-0 lead.

Down East added to the lead in the third and added an exclamation point on a two-run hit from Marcos Torres. The Wood Ducks used two pitchers that combined to three-hit Carolina (23-11) and win the finale, 5-0.

The two clubs continue their series on Friday at Grainger Stadium with first pitch set for 7 p.m.

The Mudcats return to Five County Stadium on Tuesday, May 20 when they host the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the series and all remaining home games can be purchased by going to CarolinaMudcats.com or calling 919-269-2287.
