CHARLESTON, SC - Dan Brewer reached base four times on a pair of doubles and a pair of triples along with scoring four runs as the Charleston RiverDogs scorched the Augusta GreenJackets, 11-4, in South Atlantic League action Monday night in front of 1,502 fans at Augusta's Lake Olmstead Stadium.
With the victory, the RiverDogs take the first game of the series and remain in first place in the Southern Division with a 38-26 record while the GreenJackets slip to 30-33.
The RiverDogs seized a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when David Adams slapped a two-out single to right and scored on Brewer's triple to right for the game's first run.
Charleston added to its 2-0 advantage in the second when Melky Mesa cracked a triple to center and trotted home on Neall French's groundout.
The GreenJackets cut into the RiverDogs 2-1 lead in the home half of the third when Vladimir Frias reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on Dom Duggan's single up the middle and was driven in on Josh Mazzola's lined a single to right for Augusta's first run.
Brewer smacked his second and Charleston's third triple of the ballgame to lead off the fourth and scampered home on a groundout to make the score 3-1.
The RiverDogs captured a 5-1 advantage in the sixth frame when Adams drew a leadoff walk, Brewer was hit by a pitch and Corban Joseph walked to load the bases. After Mesa lined into a double play that eliminated Adams at third, Brewer and Joseph sprinted into scoring position after they successfully executed a double steal. French smacked a RBI single up the middle that plated Brewer and Joseph.
Augusta slashed Charleston's 5-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth after the GreenJackets sent nine men to the plate and capitalized on four singles, one walk and one RiverDogs throwing error.
Charleston attained a 9-4 advantage in the seventh when Pirela walked, trotted to second on Abraham Almonte's walk and circled home when Adams singled to left while Almonte advanced to second on the play. Brewer blasted a double to right that plated Almonte as Adams reached third. Joseph lifted a sacrifice fly that scored Adams and moved Brewer to third. A wild pitch allowed Brewer to register the inning's fourth run.
Tallying his fourth extra-base hit of the game, Brewer knocked a double to center to lead off the ninth. A wild pitch advanced Brewer to third and Mesa blistered his second triple of the game that knocked home Brewer. French added an infield single that scored Mesa to make the score 11-4.
RiverDogs starter David Phelps (7-1) earned the victory as he allowed four runs - one earned - on eight hits, one walk and six strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work.
GreenJackets starter Mike Loree (3-5) suffered the defeat after he issued five earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two in 5.0 full stanzas.
Led by Brewer's four extra-base knocks, the RiverDogs tallied 13 hits while Mazzola paced the GreenJackets with three of the team's hits.
Charleston turns to righty Casey Erickson (3-2, 1.64 ERA) for Game 2 of the three-game set with first pitch set for Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. while the GreenJackets counter with right-hander Kyle Nicholson (4-6, 4.10 ERA).
