Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Charleston, WV (June 15, 2009) - Kannapolis lefty Justin Edwards turned in seven shutout innings against the West Virginia Power at Appalachian Power Park on Monday night and the Intimidators plated four runs in the third inning as they took the first game of the series with a 5-0 shutout victory.
Kannapolis took an early lead in the top of the first. Justin Greene began the game with a base hit and stole second base before scoring on Tyler Kuhn's double. The Intimidators sent nine batters to the plate and scored four times in the top of the third inning to pull away. Sergio Morales singled in the first run and scored along with Drew Garcia on Jon Gilmore's base hit. Gilmore scored the final run of the inning after John Curtis reached on Danny Bomback's fielding error.
West Virginia had eight hits in the game and spoiled a few opportunities to score. In the first inning Edwards struck out Calvin Anderson to end the inning with runners on second and third. The Power had the bases full in the bottom of the eighth when Tyson Corley got Jeremy Farrell to end the inning with a groundout to second base.
Edwards (4-3) held the Power to seven hits over seven scoreless innings and struck out three to get the victory. Duke Welker (0-7) was tagged for five runs on six hits over four innings and struck out five in a losing effort. Brian Leach was great in relief for the Power, tossing four scoreless innings of three hit ball out of the bullpen and fanned two.
West Virginia fell to 24-40 after the loss, and the Intimidators improved to 34-29 after the win. Robbie Grossman went 0-for-4, bringing his ten game hitting streak to an end. Danny Bomback and Andrew Walker paced the Power with two hits a piece. Every Power batter reached base at least one time in the contest, including Marcus Davis who extended his on base streak to ten games.
West Virginia will continue their nine game home stand and the three game series against the Kannapolis Intimidators at Appalachian Power Park on Tuesday night. The Power will start left hander Rudy Owens (6-1, 2.48) and the Intimidators will counter with right hander Greg Infante (2-3, 3.07). The first pitch will be delivered at 7:05 PM.
