CHARLESTON, SC - Charleston starter David Phelps pitched seven shutout innings to lead the RiverDogs to a 5-0 blanking of the Kannapolis Intimidators in South Atlantic League action Sunday in front of 3,217 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
With his fastball reaching 95 mph in the seventh inning, Phelps (10-3) earned his league-leading 10th win after he held Kannapolis scoreless and scattered four singles and two walks while striking out eight.
In the process, the RiverDogs snap a season-high five-game losing skid and improve their second half record to 9-15 (48-46 overall) while the Intimidators fall to 14-10 (51-42 overall). The shutout was the first since the RiverDogs posted back-to-back whitewashings July 2 and 3 against Greenville at Riley Park.
Reliever Brad Rulon came on in the eighth to complete the shutout and closed the door by facing the minimum of six batters and fanning a pair.
The RiverDogs jumped to an early 4-0 advantage in the first when Abraham Almonte lined a single and sprinted to third on Corban Joseph's single. Melky Mesa reached on a fielder's choice that knocked in Almonte while Joseph was eliminated at second. Taylor Grote singled up the middle and Addison Maruszak added a RBI single that plated Mesa. Mitch Abeita capped the inning with a two-run double.
Charleston padded its lead to 5-0 in the sixth when Maruszak and Abeita each drew walks. With Neall French batting, Maruszak stole third and scampered home on a passed ball by Kannapolis catcher Luis Sierra.
Intimidators starter J.R. Ballinger (0-3) suffered the defeat after he tossed five full frames and was charged with four earned runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out one.
Charleston collected seven hits on the afternoon with no one batter securing more than one while Dan Black got two of Kannapolis' four knocks.
The homestand concludes Monday at 7:05 p.m. as the RiverDogs hand the ball to southpaw Manny Banuelos (7-4, 2.40 ERA) while the Intimidators counter with righty Nevin Griffith (0-1, 1.69 ERA).
