Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

CHARLESTON, SC - David Phelps proved why he is one of the top pitchers in the South Atlantic League on Sunday night, as the RiverDogs cruised to a 5-0 win over the Intimidators at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Phelps (10-3) earned his league-best tenth win of the season, pitching seven shutout innings. The former Notre Dame standout allowed just four hits, while striking out eight and walking two.

The Intimidators had very few chances all night long and went down quietly. Phelps and reliever Brad Rulon retired the last seven hitters in order.

Phelps did not need much run support, but got plenty anyway very early against Kannapolis starter J.R. Ballinger (0-3). Ballinger gave up four runs on five hits in the bottom of the first inning to put Charleston out in front for good. Ballinger did get through the next four innings without any more damage done, but took the loss for the third time in three starts.

Drew O'Neil gave up a run in his two innings without allowing a hit. The right-hander walked four and also struck out a season-high four. Kyle Bellamy did work a perfect eighth inning in relief.
