Legends Rally Comes up Short
July 19, 2009 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Lexington Legends News Release
After falling behind by five runs, the Lexington Legends rallied to within one, but Lakewood held on for a 6-5 victory Sunday evening in Lakewood.
The BlueClaws opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Anthony Gose walked, moved to second on an infield out and scored on a single by Travis d'Arnaud. Lexington tied it in the second on a single by Andy Simunic and a double by Steve Brown.
Lakewood added a run in the fourth and four more in the fifth. The BlueClaws loaded the bases in the fifth against Lexington starter Jordan Lyles. After Brian Wabick relieved Lyles, Jeremy Hamilton singled to score a run. Wabick retired the next two hitters, but Troy Hanzawa singled to score another run, giving Lakewood a 4-1 lead. With the bases still loaded, D'Arby Myers singled to drive in two more, making the score 6-1.
The Legends bounced back in the sixth, loading the bases with one out. Singles by Brown and Jorge De Leon brought in two runs and left the bases loaded. Ryan Bergh, pitching in relief of starter Heitor Correa, struck out pinch hitter Brian Pellegrini for the second out. But third baseman Travis Mattair was unable to field Jay Austin's softly hit ground ball, and two runs scored on the error to cut the Lakewood lead to one at 6-5.
The Legends only had one baserunner the rest of the game against Bergh and B.J. Rosenberg. Rosenberg, a graduate of Meade County High School and a former University of Louisville player, retired the side in order in the ninth to get his 15th save.
Correa (7-3) was the winner. Lyles (5-8), who pitched the first four innings and to three batters in the fifth, was the losing pitcher. The series concludes with a 7:05 p.m. game Monday.
