Charleston RiverDogs News Release
LEXINGTON, KY- On Wednesday afternoon, 6,776 fans saw the Charleston RiverDogs defeat the Lexington Legends 9-4 at Whitaker Bank Ballpark for their tenth victory in a row. The streak is their longest since they won 10 in a row during the 2000 season and puts their record at a South Atlantic League best 15-3.
Of all the wins by the RiverDogs so far this year, this may have been their best all-around performance. They scored their first two runs in the second on back-to-back doubles by Angelo Gumbs and Kelvin De Leon (2-4, 2 runs, RBI) and an RBI single by Francisco Arcia (2-4 2 RBI). In the fourth, Charleston blew the game open with a four-run rally against starter Kyle Hallock (1-1) that was aided by two Lexington errors. After two singles and a fielders choice put runners on first and third with one out, Arcia's second single of the game scored one run and a second run scored on a throwing error. Two singles then loaded the bases again and a Lexington throwing error on a possible double-play ball allowed two more runs to score as the RiverDogs stretched their lead to 6-0.
The two early outbursts would prove to be more than enough for starting pitcher Bryan Mitchell (1-1). Mitchell fired five innings of shutout ball for Charleston, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out seven. He also received help from his defense in the form of two diving catches on consecutive plays in the fourth inning, first by Mason Williams in center, immediately followed by Tyler Austin in right.
In the later innings, the RiverDogs used their power stroke to tack on a few more runs. In the seventh, Austin led off the inning with his fifth homer of the year and one inning later, Williams (4-4, HR, RBI, 2 runs,) and Anderson Feliz hit back-to-back solo shots for their first dingers of 2012, making the score 9-0. The Legends managed to avoid the shutout by scoring four runs in the eighth, but Fred Lewis got the final four outs to seal the victory
Charleston will send RHP Scottie Allen (1-1 6.00 ERA) to the mound to try for the team's 11th win in a row tomorrow night in Lexington against RHP Michael Foltynewicz (3-1 1.66 ERA). First pitch is scheduled to be at 7:05 p.m.
