Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - On the strength of a three-run outburst in the seventh inning, the Kannapolis Intimidators came from behind to defeat the Augusta GreenJackets by a 4-2 score on Wednesday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
With the GreenJackets clinging to a 2-1 lead, the Intimidators batted around in the seventh and scored three times on four hits and a pair of walks. Keenyn Walker led off with a single for Kannapolis and stole second on the first pitch to Collin Kuhn. When the throw to second went into center field, Walker headed to third and later scored to tie the game at two when the throw from center went wide of the third-base bag. Later in the inning, with one out and the bases full, Kevan Smith dumped a two-run double on the right field line to bring home the game's deciding runs.
Augusta couldn't solve Terrance Marin, who fired the game's final 3.1 innings for the Intimidators. They had runners on with two outs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings but that's where they'd stay. Marin (2-1) allowed two hits and two walks in 3.1 scoreless innings, striking out five to get the win.
The GreenJackets struck first with a pair of first inning runs on back-to-back RBI singles by Brett Krill and Ben Thomas to go up 2-0. Thomas's hit was the third of three in the inning, but it would be the last for the GreenJackets until the seventh. Edwin Escobar held the lead for Augusta, keeping the Intimidators off the scoreboard until the sixth when Rangel Ravelo's sacrifice fly cut the Augusta lead to 2-1.
Escobar didn't figure in the decision, allowing a one on four hits and two walks in six innings while striking out two in his second quality start of the year. Andrew Berger (0-2) allowed all three seventh-inning runs to take the loss for the GreenJackets.
The game was halted for 25 minutes in the bottom of the sixth as the result of a power surge that brought down some of the ballpark lights. The outage came as a result of a blown transformer two blocks from the ballpark that knocked power out in 26 homes, according to Georgia Power. Play resumed once the lights were shut completely off and restarted.
Kannapolis third baseman Rangel Ravelo went 0-2 with two intentional walks to end his 15-game hitting streak.
The GreenJackets will send Clayton Blackburn (0-1, 3.77 to the mound against Kevin Vance (1-0, 2.08) on the season's first Thirsty Thursday, presented by The Library. Small soft drinks and draft beers will be sold for a dollar throughout the game. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
