Souza Puts on Show, Leads Suns to Win over Braves

Rome, GA - The Rome Braves lost to the Hagerstown Suns 24-2 Wednesday night before a crowd of 2,021 at State Mutual Stadium. The Suns had 24 hits on the night.Hagerstown grabbed an early lead in the first inning off starter Carlos Perez with five runs highlighted by an RBI single from Matthew Skole and a bases clearing triple by Steven Souza. The Braves answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning on a ground ball RBI from Edison Sanchez for the 5-1 score. That's as close as Rome would get before Hagerstown's hitting and scoring parade began. The Suns would go on to score two runs in the second, a run in the third, six in the fifth, four in the seventh, and three in the eighth and ninth innings for a 24-4 victory.

The story of the game was Steven Souza's big night for Hagerstown. Souza was 4-6 with nine RBI. He had a triple, homerun, and two singles to lead the Suns offensively. Two all-time Rome Braves records were shattered as well. The 24 runs by Hagerstown broke the previous record of runs allowed by Rome pitching which was 19. The Suns' 24 hits broke the 21 hits record allowed by Rome pitching. Both previous records were set in 2009.

Taylor Hill (3-0) gets the win for the Suns after only allowing two Braves runs in five innings of work. Rome's Carlos Perez (0-3) records the loss, giving up eight hits and seven runs in two innings pitched.
