HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads topped the Greensboro Grasshoppers, 5-4, in a walk-off win before 2,035 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Wednesday afternoon . The two teams are tied for first place in the Northern Division standings.
Greensboro (13-6) struck with an unearned run in the top of the first frame against RHP Santo Perez and the 'Dads (13-6). CF Rand Smith singled his way on and quickly took second base with a steal. Smith then moved to third on a grounder by 1B Aaron Senne, who reached on a miscue on the play. One out later, RF Ryan McIntyre doubled Smith in for the 1-0 advantage.
The Crawdads responded right away in the bottom of the first. CF Chris Grayson sparked the charge with a one-out single, followed quickly by a bunt single from 2B Rougned Odor, putting runners at first and second. 1B Trever Adams loaded the bases with a single, before SS Hanser Alberto tied the fame with a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing in Grayson and making it 1-1.
The Grasshoppers moved back in front the very next inning. With two on and one away Rand Smith singled in LF James Wooster from third base to put Greensboro up, 2-1.
The Crawdads again came back in the bottom of the sixth inning. Alberto led off the frame with a solo home run over the left field wall, squaring the score at 2-2. LF Zach Cone worked a walk and took second on a single by RF Jordan Akins. C Joe Maloney then attempted a sacrifice bunt, but RHP Dejai Oliver fielded the grounder and fired a bullet to third to retire Cone on the fielder's choice. After a strikeout, DH Luis Sardinas belted a two-run double to center field, plating Akins and Maloney for the 4-2 lead.
Greensboro, though, refused to go down quietly, tying the game in the top of the ninth against RHP Nick Martinez (W, 1-0). Senne started the inning with a single and moved to third on a DH Matt Smith double. Martinez then struck out McIntyre, but the third strike was on a passed ball that got by Maloney, allowing Senne to score and McIntyre to reach base safely. SS Terrence Dayleg tied it with an RBI fielder's choice to short, plating Smith for the 4-4 tie.
The Crawdads had one last rally in the bottom of the ninth against RHP Brad Mincey (L, 0-1). Grayson started the frame by reaching on an error. After a strikeout, 1B Trever Adams singled Grayson to second base. Grayson then took off for third on a stolen base attempt, drawing an errant throw from C Tony Caldwell that bounced down the left field line, enabling Grayson to streak home for the final run, lifting Hickory to the 5-4 walk-off win.
