Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power beat the Savannah Sand Gnats 2-1 Wednesday at Appalachian Power Park. The Power broke a tie game with a run in the eighth to help snap a seven game losing streak.
Savannah took a 1-0 lead in the first when TJ Rivera singled, moved to second on an errant pick-off attempt, and scored on a base hit by Aderlin Rodriguez. West Virginia, however, answered immediately in the home half of the inning. Jodaneli Carvajal walked and stole second before scoring on a single by Jose Osuna to tie the game.
Starting pitchers Zac Fuesser and Alex Panteliodis both worked well over six innings, trading zeros during the rest of their work. The Power's Fuesser struck out eight over six innings and didn't walk a batter while the Sand Gnats Panteliodis retired 14 straight batters after allowing Osuna's run-scoring single.
In the bottom of the eighth, Junior Sosa singled with one out. Savannah reliever John Leathersich attempted to pick Sosa off first base and had the runner caught between the bags when a throwing error by first baseman Brian Harrison allowed the runner to advance to third. Alen Hanson blooped a single over top of a drawn in infield to give West Virginia a 2-1 lead. Hanson's hit was his second of the day after he had extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a single in the sixth.
Jordan Cooper (1-1) pitched the final two innings for the Power to earn the win and Leathersich (0-1) was charged with the loss.
West Virginia and Savannah play the third game of this series on Thursday evening at Appalachian Power Park. Zack Dodson will make the start at 7:05 pm for the Power against the Sand Gnats Domingo Tapia.
POWER RECORD: 6-13
