April 13, 2009 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento River Cats and partners at U.S. Bank will host a special AAA School Day prior to the team's 11:35 a.m. game against the Portland Beavers at Raley Field on April 15th, 2009 in honor of Jackie Robinson Day - the anniversary of Robinson breaking baseball's color barrier to become the game's first African-American player. The event will include a special pre-game assembly featuring former Negro League ballplayers Elmer Carter and Don Porter as well as members of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American pilots in the history of the United States military. The pre-game assembly featuring the special guests is open to all fans in attendance that day and will begin at 9:30 a.m.
This event was put together with the help of Donte and Dominic Morris, two brothers who grew up in nearby Vallejo. Donte and Dominic are Sacramento State University students have recently started a local amateur baseball league to honor the impact of the Negro Leagues on today's game and players.
Carter, who played catcher for the Kansas City Monarchs, once caught for the legendary Satchel Paige. Porter played in the Negro Leagues in the 1950's.
The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African American pilots in the history of the United States military. The creation of the Airmen in 1941 was a ground-breaking occasion in the history of the U.S. military and paved the way for the desegregation of all branches of the American military.
The River Cats and U.S. Bank have partnered to host AAA School Days at Raley Field for 6 years. The program includes assemblies to over160,000 children annually and is highlighted by a baseball-themed educational curriculum that focuses on three 'A's' - Attitude, Attendance and Academics - as well as other relevant social and community issues.
