Portland Beavers News Release

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Anthony Recker belted a two-run homer and former Beaver Dan Giese worked four strong innings of relief to help the Sacramento River Cats to a 4-1 victory over Portland Monday night at Raley Field.

Giese (1-0) teamed with starter Gio Gonzalez, who was taken out after three scoreless innings due to a pitch limit, and another former Beaver, Chad Reineke, to hold the Beavers (3-2) to three hits on the night. Reineke, who made three starts for Portland in 2008, struck out three and worked the final two innings for just the eighth save of his six-year career.

Recker, Eric Patterson and Gregorio Petit logged two hits apiece for the River Cats (2-3).

Portland's Josh Banks, making his first start of the year, struck out five and allowed four runs and eight hits across five innings in the loss, Portland's second in a row after starting the season 3-0.

The River Cats grabbed an early lead in the first. Patterson doubled to lead off the inning, stole third and scored on an errant throw by Portland catcher Eliezer Alfonzo. Sean Doolittle's RBI single later scored Jeff Baisley, who doubled, as the River Cats took a 2-0 lead.

After Will Venable tripled and scored on a sac fly by Emil Brown to trim the River Cats' lead in the top of the fourth, Recker's two-run home run off Banks (0-1) in the bottom of the inning upped Sacramento's lead to 4-1.

The Beavers and River Cats meet in the second of their four-game series Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m.
