Tacoma Home Run Spoils Sadowski's Gem In Series Opener

Fresno Grizzlies News Release

FRESNO, CA - The visiting Tacoma Rainiers managed only two hits in the series opener at Chukchansi Park on Monday night, but one was all they needed. Prentice Redman's two-out, solo home run in the 6th inning spoiled an outstanding performance by Ryan Sadowski, and provided the only run of the game as Tacoma defeated the Grizzlies 1-0.

Grizzlies starter Ryan Sadowski dominated the Tacoma lineup early in his first start of the 2009 season. The right-hander set down the first 11 hitters he faced, and after walking Jeff Clement with two outs in the fourth, retired six more Rainiers in order. Sadowski recorded seven strikeouts over 6.0 innings of work.

Sadowski's bid for a no-hitter came to an abrupt end in the 6th inning. With two outs and the bases empty, leadoff hitter Prentice Redman hammered a ball off of the Chukchansi Park scoreboard in left-center to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

It turned out that was all they would need. Rainiers' starter Andy Baldwin scattered three hits over 6.0 shutout innings, Denny Stark followed with two scoreless frames, and former Grizzly Randy Messenger retired the heart of the Fresno lineup in the ninth to nail down the save.

The Grizzlies and Rainiers will play Game 2 of their four-game series on Tuesday afternoon at Chukchansi Park, with game time scheduled for 12:05pm. Right-hander Matt Kinney makes his second start of the season for Fresno, while Tacoma counters with southpaw Jason Vargas.
