MEMPHIS, TN - The Memphis Redbirds used a three-run third inning to beat New Orleans 5-2 Monday night at AutoZone Park.
Four hits and a walk did all the damage in the third inning for the 'Birds. With two outs Nick Stavinoha, Allen Craig and Jarrett Hoffpauir all delivered RBI-singles in order to give Memphis a 4-2 advantage after three. The Redbirds added an insurance run in the eighth when Craig singled and scored on Shane Robinson's fielder's choice. Craig and Jon Jay each finished the night with two hits. Michael Ryan led the way for the Zephyrs driving in a run with two hits.
Blake Hawksworth earned the win with five innings of work for Memphis. The right-hander allowed two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Chris Perez nailed down his second save of the season punching out Ryan to end the game. New Orleans starter Daniel Barone took the loss giving up four runs on four hits over 2.2 innings.
Clayton Mortensen will make his season debut for the 'Birds tomorrow against right-hander Ryan Tucker for the Zephyrs. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
