Sacramento River Cats News Release
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The River Cats took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, but Las Vegas would score three runs, including the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth, beating Sacramento by a score of 3-2 on Wednesday night at Cashman Field.
River Cats starter Justin Thomas (0-1) looked dominant from the outset, holding the 51s scoreless through six innings of work. After giving up a run in the seventh, Thomas was pulled in favor of reliever James Simmons with two men on. One of the runners would come around to score, tying the game at two.
After a scoreless eighth and top of the ninth, River Cats lefty Hideki Okajima (0-1) took the mound for his second inning of work. After a Zach Lutz fly-out to center, first baseman Eric Campbell doubled down the left field line. The next batter, Omar Quintanilla, singled to right-center scoring Campbell and giving Las Vegas the 3-2, walk-off win.
Thomas did not factor into the decision, giving up two earned runs on six hits, two walks and five strikeouts. Simmons was charged with a blown save, while Okajima suffered his first loss of the season.
Sacramento catcher Luke Montz paced the team offensively, going 2-for-2 with two walks and a solo home run-his second of the season. Grant Green went 2-for-5 and now has six hits in his last two games, while Stephen Vogt went 1-for-5, extending his hitting streak to a team-season-high-tying nine games.
The two teams square off in game three of the four-game set on Thursday night at 7:05, as Cats righty Sonny Gray (1-0, 2.45 ERA) will take on 51s left-hander Darin Gorski (0-1, 9.00 ERA) at Cashman Field.
The River Cats return home on April 20 for an eight-game homestand against the Reno Aces and Salt Lake Bees.
