Redbirds' Wacha Shuts Down Zephyrs

April 18, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Michael Wacha allowed three hits in seven scoreless innings, and Rob Johnson hit a second-inning home run to provide the game's only run as the Memphis Redbirds beat the New Orleans Zephyrs, 1-0 on Thursday night.

The Zephyrs have dropped three straight to the Redbirds, including two shutouts, and have not scored more than three runs in any of the seven games on their first homestand of the season.

After Johnson's two-out home run in the top of the second inning off Z's starter Elih Villanueva, Wacha managed to escape the Zephyrs' most serious scoring threat in the bottom of the frame.

Jordan Brown doubled off the wall in left-center field to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a fly out. But a chopper up the third base line was fielded by Jermaine Curtis, and Brown was tagged out while trying to get back to the bag. Kyle Skipworth then grounded out to end the inning.

The Zephyrs also put two runners on base with one out in the third, but were again doomed by shaky baserunning as Wilson Valdez was doubled off second base on a looping infield pop up by Ed Lucas.

After Kyle Skipworth walked to lead off the fifth, Wacha and two relievers combined to retire the final 15 Zephyrs batters in the game. Wacha (2-0) earned the win, fanning three and walking two, and Victor Marte picked up his second save of the year.

Villanueva (0-2) was the losing pitcher, despite yielding just three hits in six innings. He struck out five and walked two in his second consecutive start with one run allowed.

New Orleans will try to avoid a four-game sweep on Friday at 7:00 p.m., when Zephyrs right-hander Tom Koehler will be opposed by Redbirds southpaw Tyler Lyons.
