River Cats Lose Pitchers' Duel to I-Cubs, 2-1
August 12, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Sacramento River Cats News Release
DES MOINES, Iowa - Arnold Leon and Chris Resop combined to allow just two runs and seven baserunners in eight innings on Monday night, but the River Cats fell to the Iowa Cubs by a score of 2-1 in the series opener at Principal Park.
Sacramento drew first blood in the top of the fourth inning, scoring once on a Shane Peterson double. Unfortunately for Sacramento, that would be all the offense they would muster, succumbing to Justin Grimm and the rest of the I-Cubs pitching staff.
Leon was sharp for the River Cats, but two of his five hits allowed were solo home runs, giving Iowa all the offense it would need to beat Sacramento, 2-1. Leon ultimately gave up two runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts in seven innings of work for the loss, while Resop tossed one perfect inning of relief.
The River Cats collected five hits and seven walks, but were just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position, stranding nine runners. Peterson went 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a walk, while Jake Goebbert finished 0-for-2 with two free passes on the night.
The win was awarded to Grimm, who gave up just one run on four hits and four walks with six strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Josh Vitters and Mike Olt each swatted solo home runs, accounting for both of Iowa's runs.
The River Cats will send Tommy Milone (0-0, 3.60 ERA) to the mound as they try to get back in the win column against I-Cubs right Kyle Hendricks (1-0, 0.00 ERA) at 5:05 p.m. on Tuesday at Principal Park.
The River Cats return home on Friday, Aug. 16 for a five-game set against the Tucson Padres in a homestand that will feature two fireworks shows, Kids Night Out, and a Mario Encarnacion bobblehead giveaway.
