River Bandits Edge Dragons in Wednesday Pitcher's Duel
July 11, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio - Three Quad Cities pitchers combined to allow just one hit after the first inning as the River Bandits edged the Dayton Dragons 3-2 on Wednesday night. A crowd of 7,594 was in attendance at Fifth Third Field for the first game of a three-game set.
The River Bandits, who lead the Midwest League in team pitching, held the Dragons to three hits on the night as Dayton batters struck out 13 times and walked only once.
Still, the Dragons took a 2-1 lead to the sixth inning. They scored in the bottom of the first, getting back-to-back singles by Jose Garcia and Lorenzo Cedrola and a double steal that advanced runners to second and third. Garcia scored from third when Andy Sugilio's ground ball to second base was mishandled by David Hensley to make it 1-0.
After Quad Cities scored a run in the fourth, the Dragons briefly regained the lead in the fifth when J.D. Williams reached on an error, went from first to third on a single by Alejo Lopez, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Raul Wallace to make it 2-1.
Quad Cities scored two runs in the sixth against Dragons reliever Miguel Aguilar (2-1), who allowed a lead-off walk and then back-to-back singles to load the bases with no one out. A wild pitch by Aguilar brought in the tying run, and with one out, Logan Mattix's sacrifice fly gave the River Bandits a 3-2 lead.
The Dragons did not have a hit over the final four innings. In the bottom of the ninth, Jeter Downs hit a fly ball that was caught against the left field fence, and Andy Sugilio followed with a high drive to right that was caught on the warning track, but the inning ended without a Dragons base runner.
Notes: Dragons all-star closer John Ghyzel left the game in the middle of an at-bat in the eighth inning after a visit to the mound by Dragons trainer Andrew Cleves. No further information on Ghyzel's condition was available.
