Two Eighth Inning Homers Give River Bandits Win over Bees

Davenport, IA. - It was a close game for a most of the night, but the Burlington Bees (4-14,34-53) still took a 4-2 loss to the Quad Cities River Bandits (9-9,49-39). Tanner Duncan (2-1) earned his second victory in his 18th appearance for his efforts out of the bullpen, going two innings, allowing one run on hit, allowing one walk, and striking out two. Austin Warren (0-1) suffered the loss after giving up three runs on three hits, surrendering a walk, and striking out three in an inning and two thirds of work.

Pina gives Burlington early advantage

Spencer Griffin started the second inning off with his second triple in the last five games to give Burlington a runner on third with no outs. Then Keinner Pina sent a fly ball deep enough to right that allowed Griffin to score on a sacrifice fly and give the Bees a 1-0 lead. Burlington did manage to load the bases in the inning on a single from Julio Garcia and walks from Alvaro Rubalcaba and Torii Hunter, but Orlando Martinez struck out looking to end the inning.

Walks allow River Bandits to tie game in the fifth

Alfredo Angarita led the bottom half of the fifth off with a single and later on advanced to second after Ruben Castro got hit by a pitch. Andrew Wantz then took over for Ziemba on the mound but ran into some problems of his own. Wantz walked Logan Mattix who was the first batter Wantz faced to load the bases but did strikeout Colton Shaver for the second out. Wantz couldn't get Jonathan Lacroix to go down though and ended up walking him to drive in a run and tie the game at 1-1.

River Bandits homer twice to take the lead

The game remained tied for quite a while before Quad Cities finally broke it in the eighth. Scott Schreiber got on with a one out single and Michael Papierski sent a ball over the right field wall for a two run homerun, giving the River Bandits a 3-1 lead. Seth Beer said a two run lead wasn't enough and he sent his first homerun as a River Bandit to left for a solo shot, making the score 4-1.

Connor Fitzsimons hit a solo shot in the ninth for his fourth homerun of the season to make the score 4-2, but if wasn't enough, as the Bees fell and failed to even the series.

Can't touch Willy Collado

Willy Collado just dominated the Bees lineup in his three and a third innings, allowing just one hit, one walk, and getting the Bees to strikeout nine times. The River Bandits also got a good performance out of Carlos Sanabria, who went two innings, allowed just a walk, and struck out three.

New month, new Keinner

Although it was another frustrating offensive game for the Bees, managing just two hits, and their 17 strikeouts now makes it seven games in a row with ten plus strikeouts as a team. However, Keinner Pina has not struggled at all since the new month of July has started. Pina was batting just .245 June 30th, but has raised it to .262 thanks to a six game hitting streak. Pina is 9-22 since July started and has driven in three runs.

Another new kid

The Bees welcomed another member to their team, Alvaro Rubalcaba. The 23 year old infielder went to Cal State Northridge, where he hit an impressive .299 in his 2017 season. He has had a shaky start in the minors, going 0-16 in five games with Orem. Rubalcaba was 0-3 with a walk in his debut but will look to get his bat going in the Bees upcoming series.

Looking Ahead

The Bees will enjoy an off day tomorrow, before starting things back up on Wednesday to begin their six game homestand. The Bees will welcome the Lansing Lugnuts to Community Field and this will be the first and only series of the season. The Lugnuts are a class A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, and currently stand in third place, but Lansing has already clinched a spot in the playoffs, for finishing in second place is the first half. The Lugnuts are expected to start Matt Gunter, who is 1-3 with a 4.19 ERA in eight starts. Gunter has only thrown 14 strikeouts in 34.1 innings pitched, so the Bees shouldn't have another high strikeout night. Burlington has not yet announced an expected starter yet for Wednesday's game.
