Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs surrendered four sixth-inning runs in the series opening 5-1 loss to the Lake County Captains on Wednesday night. The Chiefs are now 10-8 in the second half and 49-39 overall with game two of the series set for 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
There was no scoring until the bottom of the fourth inning on Captains starter Francisco Perez. Yariel Gonzalez led off with a solo home run over the left field wall for his fourth long ball of the season and first while batting from the right side of the plate as the Chiefs grabbed a 1-0 lead.
The Captains immediately answered in the top of the fifth with a solo homer of their own. Will Benson took Chiefs starter Alvaro Seijas deep to right to lead off the inning and tie the game 1-1.
Lake County strung together a two-out rally to move ahead in the top of the sixth. Nolan Jones singled with two outs and Jonathan Laureano singled to put runners at the corners. Benson delivered a single to center scoring Jones as the Captains took a 2-1 lead. With runners at the corners again, Jose Vicente hit a three-run homer to left for a 5-1 advantage.
Seijas (2-5) took the loss throwing six innings allowing five runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Zach Prendergast pitched two scoreless innings on one hit with one walk and two strikeouts. Patrick Dayton pitched a scoreless ninth inning without allowing a hit with one walk and two strikeouts.
