Rivard Tosses 5-Hitter in Calgary Win

The Calgary Vipers received their best pitching performance of the season in defeating the Chico Outlaws 6-0 at Nettleton Stadium in Chico, California. Reggie Rivard (5-1) threw the Vipers first complete game shutout of the year and only allowed five hits along the way. Hurling 127 pitches the Fort McMurray, Alberta resident struck out nine while walking three batters. With the victory the Snakes are now 26-14 in the second half and remain three and a half games ahead of the Victoria Seals for first place in the North Division with five games remaining. Calgary's magic number to clinch a playoff spot is down to two while their overall record in the Golden Baseball League is 49-34.

Calgary took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning after Jorge Mejia singled, Brent Metheny collected a run batted in double, and Kevin Price knocked in a run with a base hit.

Luis Taveras hit a home run, his eighth, for a second straight night in the fifth frame to increase the Vipers lead to 3-0.

Two more runs were added in the sixth by Calgary for a 5-0 score as Metheny walked, Julio Ramirez singled, both runners advanced into scoring position on an error, Metheny scored on a wild pitch, and Price drove in one with a sacrifice fly.

For a fourth straight inning the Snakes scored in the seventh when Jonny Kaplan singled and Mejia plated him for a 6-0 final with a RBI double.

This three game series in Chico against the Outlaws concludes on Thursday September 2nd both at 8:05 PM MDT.

Calgary plays the Tijuana Big Horn Sheep in Yuma, Arizona on Friday September 3rd at 8:00 PM MDT, a double-header on Saturday September 4th at 6:30 PM MDT, and Sunday September 5th at 7:00 PM MDT.
