Victoria Seals Capped in Edmonton

Edmonton, AB - Opening up a home-and-home series with the Edmonton Capitals, the Victoria Seals returned to Telus Field on Tuesday night. Turning to left-hander Isaac Hess (5-3) for the start, the Seals matched up against Alexander Francisco (7-3) on the mound for Edmonton in game one.

The Seals jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Wilver Perez led off the top of the first inning with a single and later scored on an RBI base hit courtesy of Terrence McClain. Evening the score in the second, the Capitals got on the board when Matt Rogelstad drove a run-scoring double to the gap for a 1-1 game through two complete innings.

Victoria would restore their lead in the fourth frame, using a fielder's choice to Matt Kavanaugh after a Capitals error allowed Brian Rios to reach to set up an RBI single off the bat of Colin Moro. Responding in the bottom of the frame, Edmonton tied the game with the help of a solo home run from Cliff Brumbaugh.

Then, after a single from Mike Rose and a walk to Matt Rogelstad, the Capitals took their first lead of the game when Francisco helped his own cause with a two-run single up the middle to put the home side up 4-2.

Adding some insurance in the bottom of the eighth inning, Brumbaugh powered his league-leading 21st home run of the season and second of the night over the left field fence to give Edmonton a 5-2 advantage. Retired in order in the top of the ninth, the Seals fall to 0-4 at Telus Field this season with a 5-2 loss in the series opener.

Isaac Hess took the loss despite six strong innings of work, while Alexander Francisco earned his eighth win of the season for the Capitals. Cliff Brumbaugh paced the Edmonton offense with three hits and three runs scored, while Terrence McClain and Colin Moro collected the lone RBI's for Victoria.

The Seals return to Telus Field tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. (PT) for game two against the Capitals. The contest will be broadcast online at www.victoriaseals.ca.
