Chico Outlaws News Release

(Chico, CA. August 31st, 2010) The Chico Outlaws took one on the chin on Tuesday night at the Nett as Calgary pounded out 17 hits enroute to a 14-8 win in game one of a three game series.

Outlaws starter Kris Honel (8-3) struggled right off the bat against the Snakes, allowing two runs in the second inning. In the third, Honel gave up six runs on four hits and two walks without recording an out (including a three run blast from catcher Luis Taveras) before being replaced by Rusty Jones. Hotenel threw 80 pitches overall, issuing five walks and recording one strikeout.

Jones struggled in the third inning, allowing five unearned runs on two Chico errors, forcing manager Garry Templeton to bring in Reed Dickert. Dickert got the final out of the third inning on the first batter he faced and ended up pitching well, going five and a third innings in long relief. Kevin Price of Calgary touched up Dickert with a solo homer in the fifth inning, the only run he allowed while striking out five Vipers.

Justin Segal pitched the ninth for the Outlaws, allowing two hits and striking out one.

Blake Gailen, Bobby Hill, JJ Sherrill, John Urick, Santo DeLeon and Reed Dickert all had RBI base hits for the Outlaws in the game. Despite trailing 13-0 after the top of the third inning, Chico clawed back, outscoring Calgary 8-1 to close the game in a losing effort.

Calgary starter Mac Suzuki (2-2), a former big leaguer with four teams, went five innings, allowing six earned runs on five hits, walking four and striking out three to earn the win.

Scott Watson, Monte Mansfield, Jason Norderum and Rob Naegele combined to finish the game for the Vipers, who improve to 25-14 in the second half with the win. Chico dropped to 21-17 and three and a half games behind the Snakes.

Wednesday's game will see leftie Mark McLemore of the Bandits, a big leaguer himself with Houston in 2007, taking the hill against Reggie Rivard of Calgary in game two of the series.
