Calgary Roughnecks News Release
Calgary, AB - Calgary Roughnecks will have three 1st round picks in the 2006 NLL (National Lacrosse League) entry draft.
They started the day with only one, but then traded young defender Brad MacDonald to the defending NLL champions Toronto Rock for another 1st round pick, and finally at the NLL's entry draft they swapped their opening selection of the night to Buffalo for a third first round pick in 2006.
"Obviously we are looking to the future," said Roughnecks President and General Manager Brad Banister. "As everyone knows we already have a strong squad, but it never hurts to constantly strengthen your stable with promising youngsters."
He added, "We believe the 2006 entry draft is going to be a good one and we are in a wonderful position to take full advantage of the talent that will be available."
With their second pick (18th overall) Calgary took Callum Crawford and two choices later they picked Andy Secore, both members of the Six Nations Arrows, which will be playing in the final of the Minto Cup later this week.
Crawford, 20, is 6-foot-3 and 180lb, while Secore, 21, is 5-foot-11 and 210lb. Both are forwards.
In the third round, the Riggers took Ryan Tasker of the Surrey Stickman (34th overall) and then snagged Calgary product Brett Christensen at 40th.
"It's a dream come true," said Christensen. "I have been a fan of the Roughnecks since they arrived in town and can't begin to tell you how excited I am to be a member of the club."
Christensen, 21, currently plays for the Calgary Raiders. He is 6-foot-2 and 205lb and studying business at Mount Royal College. He went to Bishop Grandin High School.
With their 5th round pick (51st overall) the Riggers selected Andrew Kirkaldy, also of the Calgary Raiders. He lives in Red Deer.
Calgary exchanged their 3rd round pick (29th overall) for Portland 3rd round selection (34th overall) and a third round choice in 2006.
With their final selection in the 6th round (63rd overall) the Riggers got Paddy Corrigan of the Burnaby Lakers. Corrigan is 6-foot-6 and weighs 210lb.
