August 29, 2005 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Portland Lumberjax News Release

With the first overall selection in the 2005 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft, Head Coach/GM Derek Keenan and the Portland LumberJax select defenseman Brodie Merrill out of Georgetown University.

"Merrill was a no-brainer at number one overall in the NLL Entry Draft," said Keenan. "He is the complete package - big, strong, fast, and skillful on the field and a well-rounded individual with character off the field. Merrill is the type of player that we can build our expansion franchise around."

Native of Orangeville, Ontario, Merrill, 23, graduated from Georgetown in 2005 with a degree in marketing. The solid 6ft, 4in 205lb Collegiate All-American defenseman was New England Defensive High School Player of the Year at Salisbury High School in Connecticut.

Brodie and his brother Patrick are the first two brothers in league history to be selected first overall in the league's Entry Draft. Patrick, also a defenseman, was selected by the Toronto Rock with the first overall selection in the 2002 Entry Draft.

The LumberJax select three more times in the 2005 NLL Entry Draft. They have the first pick in rounds four through six in the six-round draft (numbers 34, 45, 56 overall).

Tickets to the LumberJax for each of the nine home games range from $10.00-$25.00, with additional VIP seating available. Deposits are now being accepted for season tickets starting at $90.00, by calling 503.797.9739 or go to www.PortlandJax.com.
