Arizona Sting News Release

GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- Arizona Sting General Manager and Head Coach Bob Hamley announced today the Sting's five selections in the 2005 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft including forward Matt Brown with the 5th overall selection in the first round.

With their first pick (5th overall), the Sting chose Brown out of the University of Denver. A native of Burnaby, British Columbia, the 22-year-old led his team in goals with 36 while playing in all 14 games at Denver in 2005. A big sized forward, Brown is a pure goal scorer who scored 113 goals (and 137 points) in only 56 games during his collegiate career.

Last season, Brown earned numerous accolades for his play including First Team All-GWLL, Preseason All-America Honorable Mention Honors, Great Western Lacrosse League (GWLL) Player of the Week honors on April 12 and Pioneer Face-off Classic All-tournament team honors. He ranks fourth all-time on Denver's career goals scored list (113). Brown finished the season ranked eighth in the nation in goals per game with 2.57 and led the GWLL in goals per game (2.57).

In 2004, Brown led Denver in goals (25) and points (29). He was also named to the 2004 Face-Off Classic All-Tournament attack team and named to the All-GWLL second-team. In 2003, he led the Pioneers in points (26) and was second on the club in goals (20). During his freshman season, Brown led the team in points (40) and goals (32). He received the GWLL Newcomer of the Year award for his remarkable performance as a rookie. He opened the season with a school-record seven consecutive hat tricks and was named to the Pioneer Face-Off Classic All-Tournament team.

The Sting did not have any draft choices in the second or third rounds but traded up to land Jon Niziol in the third round with the 31st overall pick. To get that selection, Arizona traded forward Chris Fiore, a 2nd round pick in 2007 and a 4th round pick in 2006 to Edmonton in exchange for their 3rd round pick in today's draft (31st overall) and Mike McLellan.
