Portland Pirates News Release

Worcester, MA - Tobias Rieder scored twice, tying Andy Miele for the team lead in goals with 26, but the Worcester Sharks never relinquished their lead, defeating the Pirates 3-2 on Tuesday night. Andy Miele tied Benoit Gratton for 10th in Pirates history in assists by adding two in the loss.

The Pirates fell behind early. Travis Oleksuk, the Sharks' leading scorer against the Pirates this season, gave Worcester a 1-0 lead at the 7:44 mark of the first period, his 6th goal against the Pirates this season. The Sharks thought they had scored again after a penalty to Ethan Werek, but the Pirates defense was able to clear the puck off the goal line to keep the deficit at 1 goal. Worcester outshot Portland 11-6 in the first period.

Worcester extended their lead in the second on the power play. After Joel Hanley and Brandon Yip took penalties, Freddy Hamilton doubled the Sharks lead with 16:17 left in the second. Tobias Rieder answered for the Pirates just under 5 minutes later. Rieder took a feed from Miele and snapped it past Troy Grosenick for his 25th goal of the season. Joel Hanley picked up the secondary assist on Rieder's goal. Portland nearly tied the game with 10 seconds left in the period, but Cade Fairchild's shot rang off the post and out, and the Sharks took a 2-1 lead into the third.

Matt Pelech gave the Sharks a two goal cushion again 6:32 into the third period with his third goal of the season, but Tobias Rieder struck again for the Pirates. Just 2:59 after Pelech's goal. Rieder tapped the puck past Grosenick on the third attempt for his 26th goal of the season, tying Andy Miele for the team lead. Miele and Jordan Martinook picked up assists, with Miele's assist the 113th of his career, tying him with Benoit Gratton for 10th all-time in Pirates' history. The Pirates ratcheted up the pressure on Grosenick, but he was able to stand strong in net and keep the Pirates off the board for the remainder of the game.

Worcester finishes the season series with an 8-4 record against Portland, but Andy Miele finishes with the most points against Worcester, as he tallied 7 goals and 7 assists in 12 games against the Sharks. Tobias Rieder added 6 goals against Worcester during the season series.
