Richmond Takes Series With 6-2 Win Over Indians
April 23, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- First baseman Carlos Mendez led a 13-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with two RBI as Richmond rolled to its third straight win -- a 6-2 decision over Indianapolis -- Monday night at Victory Field.
The Braves improve to 10-4 with their third series win of 2007, while the Indians fall to 10-6 with their first series loss of the season.
Richmond used a balanced effort to match its season-high hit total for a second straight night. LF Doug Clark, RF Bill McCarthy, C Corky Miller and 3B Wes Timmons recorded two base knocks apiece in the contest, while Clark, McCarthy and SS Martin Prado all crossed the dish twice.
The Braves scored six unanswered runs after the Tribe cracked the scoreboard with a run in the second. Clark gave the visitors a lead in the third, roping a RBI double before eventually scoring on a double steal.
Richmond added insurance runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth. McCarthy clobbered his first homer of the campaign -- a solo shot to center -- in the fifth. Mendez plated McCarthy with a single to left in the seventh. Mendez then lifted a sacrifice fly to score Clark in the eighth, while the visitor's final score of the evening came on a Tribe miscue.
1B Yurendell de Caster and 3B Russ Johnson managed two hits each to lead Indianapolis. The home team's only extra-base hit -- an RBI double by SS Brian Bixler in the ninth -- came after nine consecutive singles.
Braves RHP Trey Hodges (3.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) improved to 1-1 with the win, while Indians LHP Sean Burnett (4.1 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 BB, 0 SO) fell to 3-1 with the loss.
The Richmond hurlers faced 36 batters without allowing a walk and didn't yield an earned run until the ninth. The Braves had previously recorded 13 hits in a game on April 11 @ Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and and April 23 at Indianapolis.
The Tribe continues its six-game homestand with a two-game series against Norfolk. The Indians and Tides square off on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and Wednesday at 11 a.m.
Norfolk RHP Jim Johnson is scheduled to face Indianapolis RHP Bryan Bullington in Tuesday night's affair. The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley, with the pre-game show beginning at 6:40 p.m.
