Bisons Notes

April 23, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release

TODAY'S GAME: Tonight, the Buffalo Bisons host the Pawtucket Red Sox in the finale of a three-game series from Dunn Tire Park (6:05 p.m.). The Herd will be looking to rebound from their first consecutive losses of the season as the PawSox took the first two games of this set. On the hill for Buffalo will be RHP Jeff Harris. Harris threw six innings in a no-decision last Tuesday in Toledo. Pawtucket will counter with LHP Kason Gabbard, who was defeated last Monday in Scranton/WB (5.1IP, 7H, 5ER).

RED HOT BAT: Franklin Gutierrez comes into tonight's game riding a six-game hit. Since April 16, the outfielder has averaged .429 (12-28) with eight runs scored, two doubles, a home run and three RBI. The last five of his games played, Gutierrez has collected multi-hit efforts, with a season-high three hits (2R, RBI) on Friday in Toledo.

RUNNING HERD: The Bisons are second in the International League with 18 steals. At this pace, the Herd would steal 185 bases on the year, more than twice their total from a season ago (80 in 2006, 11th in the IL). Buffalo has only been caught stealing three times for an 85.7% success rate. Ben Francisco leads the Herd with five steals (T4th in the IL).

MORE ZEROES: Relievers Mike Koplove and Brian Sikorski both pitched a scoreless inning yesterday to keep their 0.00ERAs intact. Koplove is tied for the team-lead with six-games pitched and has allowed just four hits while striking out five. Sikorski has allowed just one hit (.059 average against) while striking out six in five games and 5.0 innings pitched.

ALWAYS ON: Outfielder Shin-Soo Choo was hit by a pitch yesterday and has now reached base safely in all 12 games he's played in. His .444 on-base percentage is tops on the Bisons team and his eight walks are third. Choo also had the Bisons longest hit streak of the early season with a seven-game stretch from April 11-19 (.474, 9-19).

CLOSING THEM OUT: RHP Edward Mujica has been lights out as the Bisons closer. He has not allowed a run in his first six outings and is a perfect five for five in save opportunities (his five saves lead International League). In his last four outings, Mujica has stuck out seven and retired all 12 batters he's faced.

IRON MEN: Infielder Ryan Mulhern was given the day off on Sunday. That means infielder Keith Ginter and outfielder Ben Francisco are the only two Bisons to have played in all 14 of the team's games so far this season.
